This course will introduce and drill the basic skills necessary to manage life-threatening
penetrating trauma
In addition to Basic Life Support (BLS) skills, the training will emphasize self-care and
care under fire.
Students will be familiarized with the contents of common "blowout" trauma kits and
practice with a variety of commercial and improvised pressure bandages, tourniquets
and hemostatic agents.
Course topics will include:
Scene security
Rapid trauma assessment
Treatment priorities
Controlling life-threatening bleeding
Tourniquets: when and how
Hemostatic agents (Quikclot, Celox, etc.)
Managing penetrating chest wounds
Airway management
Triage in a multi-victim situation
Recommended trauma kit contents
Students should wear comfortable clothing and
shoes suitable for moderate physical activity.
Warning — clothing may get stained with blood simulant.
